AND WE ARE PROUD MEMBERS OF THE CARROLL JAZZ ORCHESTRA.
OUR PROGRAM HAS A LONG AND PROUD HISTORY, DATING ALL THE WAY BACK TO 1970, AND IT'S AN HONOR TO BE PART OF SOMETHING THAT MEANS SO MUCH TO OUR SCHOOL AND OUR COMMUNITY. UNDER THE LEADERSHIP OF OUR INCREDIBLE DIRECTOR, MR. DAVID LEON OVER HERE, WHO HAS BEEN WITH US FOR 17 YEARS, WE'VE HAD THE CHANCE TO PUSH OURSELVES MUSICALLY AND GROW AS A BAND IN WAYS WE COULDN'T HAVE IMAGINED. THIS YEAR IS ESPECIALLY EXCITING FOR US HERE AT THE JAZZ ORCHESTRA, AS WE'VE BEEN CHOSEN TO COMPETE IN THE ESSENTIALLY ELLINGTON NATIONAL JAZZ COMPETITION AT LINCOLN CENTER IN NEW YORK CITY. AND THIS COMING MAY, AFTER PLACING IN THE TOP 30 JAZZ BANDS GLOBALLY WITH OUR DECEMBER RECORDINGS THAT WE MADE EARLIER THIS YEAR. YEAH, IT'S AN AMAZING OPPORTUNITY TO PERFORM ON ONE OF THE WORLD'S MOST FAMOUS STAGES, ALONGSIDE SOME OF THE BEST HIGH SCHOOL JAZZ BANDS FROM AROUND THE WORLD.
IT'S WHAT ALLOWS US TO DO WHAT WE LOVE AT THIS LEVEL.

ROBIN HAS TAUGHT ALL K-12 GRADES, WITH THE EXCEPTION OF THIRD AND FOURTH GRADES.
16 OF HER 25 YEARS IN PUBLIC EDUCATION HAVE BEEN AT DAWSON TEACHING ENGLISH AND HUMANITIES.
SHE HAS BEEN RECOGNIZED AS TEACHER OF THE MONTH, TEACHER OF THE YEAR, AS WELL AS BEING HONORED IN SOUTHLAKE STYLE MAGAZINE, ALONG WITH A COLLEAGUE FOR A CROSS CURRICULAR ACTIVITY IN WHICH THEIR STUDENTS CREATED TEXTBOOKS AND GARNERED DONATIONS FOR STUDENTS IN UGANDA, AFRICA. ROBIN LOVES NURTURING HER STUDENTS CONFIDENCE, SPARKING AUTHENTIC ENGAGEMENT AND INSPIRING THEIR CREATIVITY AND CRITICAL THINKING.
WHEN SHE IS NOT TEACHING, SHE SHARES AS MUCH QUALITY TIME AS SHE CAN WITH FRIENDS AND FAMILY.

SHE JOINED DAWSON THE YEAR AFTER THREE YEARS OF BEING AT EUBANKS INTERMEDIATE.
AND NURSE STEWART IS CURRENTLY THE LEAD NURSE FOR OUR DISTRICT.
IN 2014, SHE WENT BACK TO SCHOOL TO NURSING SCHOOL AT BLINN COLLEGE, OBTAINED HER RN LICENSE AND THEN FINISHED HER BACHELOR'S OF SCIENCE NURSING AT UT ARLINGTON. NURSE STEWART WORKED IN THE NURSERY, NICU, PEDIATRICS AND EVENTUALLY AS A NURSING MANAGER IN WOMEN'S SERVICE AT SAINT JOSEPH'S IN BRYAN, TEXAS. PRIOR TO MOVING HERE IN 2020, SHE LOVES HER LIFE HERE AT SOUTHLAKE AS A DRAGON NURSE, AND WE ARE SO FORTUNATE TO HAVE HER AS PART OF OUR DAWSON FAMILY.

THEY'RE VERY BUSY KIDS INVOLVED IN ALL THE DIFFERENT AREAS.
THE CHOIR PROGRAM HAS GREATLY BENEFITED, I FEEL, WITH THE ADDITION AND INTRODUCTION OF SHOW CHOIRS.
IT KIND OF GIVES IT KIND OF GIVES A TERRIFIC BALANCE BETWEEN THE THE FUN SINGING VERSUS THE MORE CHORAL TRADITIONAL SINGING. AND I THINK THAT HAS REALLY ENHANCED AND HEIGHTENED THE INTEREST FOR OUR CHOIR PROGRAMS, BECAUSE IT KIND OF GIVES A MORE DIVERSE OPPORTUNITY FOR MUSIC STYLES.
AND SHOW CHOIR IS REALLY FUN. SO BUT THAT DOESN'T TAKE AWAY FROM THE EXCELLENCE THAT IS FOUND IN THE TRADITIONAL CHORAL TRAINING.
I MEAN, LOOK AT THIS. WE HAVE THREE ALL-STATE MEMBERS FOR THIS YEAR.
YOU HAVE TO KNOW THAT'S A HUGE ACCOMPLISHMENT.
THERE IS OVER 70,000 STUDENTS. START THAT IN THE FALL.
START THE AUDITION PROCESS, AND THEY WHITTLE IT DOWN TO ONLY JUST OVER 1800 STUDENTS, MAKING THESE THREE STUDENTS HERE IN THE TOP 2.5% OF SINGERS IN THE STATE OF TEXAS. AND THAT'S QUITE AN ACCOMPLISHMENT.
SO HATS OFF TO THE PROGRAM AND ALL THE EFFORTS THAT HAVE GONE INTO DEVELOPING THAT TALENT.

LAST MONTH, JUST SO YOU KNOW WHAT ELSE IS GOING ON IN CHOIR? LAST MONTH CARROLL CHOIRS WAS SELECTED TO GO TO EPCOT AND PERFORM WITH THE DISNEY CANDLELIGHT PROCESSIONAL, WHICH IS A FULL CONCERT EXPERIENCE WITH THE DISNEY VOICES OF LIBERTY CHOIR, WHICH IS A PROFESSIONAL CHOIR WITH DISNEY AND A PROFESSIONAL 50 PIECE ORCHESTRA. SO THAT WAS PRETTY. I WENT IT WAS AN AMAZING CONCERT, AN OPPORTUNITY FOR ALL OF OUR SINGERS.
SO OUR DRAGONS HAVE BEEN USING THEIR VOICES ALL OVER TEXAS AND EVEN IN FLORIDA.
SO WHAT DO CHOIR BOOSTERS DO? OF COURSE. OUR GOALS AND DUTIES ARE TO RAISE FUNDS, OF COURSE.

ADVOCATE ENTHUSIASTICALLY FOR THE NEEDS OF OUR CHOIRS AND ORGANIZE AND COMMUNICATE WITH OUR VOLUNTEERS AND PARENTS.NOW, MY FOCUS AS A CHOIR BOOSTER PRESIDENT HAS REALLY BEEN ON PROGRAM GROWTH, AND I THINK IT'S BECAUSE I HAVE HAD KIDS GO THROUGH THE PROGRAM AND I KIND OF LIVED THROUGH HAD A CHOIR KID DURING COVID AND HOW AWFUL THAT WAS.
IT'S REALLY NOT FUN TO SING IN A MASK OR BEHIND A ZOOM CALL.
AND I THINK WE'RE DOING AN AMAZING JOB OF THAT.
IT REALLY TAKES, FROM WHAT I CAN SEE FROM MY VANTAGE POINT, IS IT TAKES A REALLY STRONG MIDDLE SCHOOL PROGRAM THAT HAS SEVENTH AND EIGHTH GRADERS FIGURING OUT THAT THEY LOVE TO SING WITH THEIR FRIENDS, AND SO THEY'LL SIGN UP FOR NINTH GRADE CHOIR.
THEY ALL BENEFIT FROM PROGRAMS WAY BACK FROM KINDER.
WE OFFER SCHOLARSHIPS FOR STUDENTS WHO WANT TO GO TO COLLEGE AND BE IN MUSIC EDUCATION, AND WE ALSO SUPPORT ALL THE EXTRA NEEDS THAT ANY THAT OUR DEPARTMENT HAS, LIKE COSTUMES, BACKDROPS, MUSIC, EQUIPMENT, ALL THOSE THINGS.
AND ONE IS FOR A GRAND PIANO FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS CENTER.
BECAUSE WE HAVE THE BEST CONCERT HALL AROUND.
HANDS DOWN. IT'S AMAZING. AND EVEN THE THE VAN CLIBURN PIANO COMPETITION WANTS TO RENT OUR PLACE.
IF WE HAD AN APPROPRIATE PIANO THAT JUST GETS EYES AND VISIBILITY ON OUR CHOIR AND OUR PROGRAM AND OUR CONCERT HALL, AND I LOVE THAT. WE ALSO ARE TRYING TO GET MORE ENHANCED LIGHTING AND SOUND FOR THE AUDITORIUM BECAUSE, AGAIN, IT'S A GREAT RENTAL SPACE AND A GREAT OPPORTUNITY FOR OUR KIDS TO PERFORM, BUT ALSO FOR THE COMMUNITY.
AND I WOULD REALLY LIKE TO SEE AND ADVOCATE FOR THE RESTORATION OF OUR SIXTH GRADE CHORAL PROGRAMS BECAUSE LIKE I SAID, GROWTH COMES FROM THOSE YOUNGER GRADES CATCHING THAT BUG AND REALLY WANTING TO PARTICIPATE IN FINE ARTS.
AND AS I WORK AS A BOOSTER PRESIDENT, I'VE REALLY SEEN THERE'S A TON OF OVERLAP WITH OUR FINE ARTS PROGRAMS. THE USE OF SPACE, THE STUDENTS, THE USUALLY IN SEVERAL DIFFERENT FINE ARTS PROGRAMS, AND EVEN IN THE DOLLARS SPENT.
SO YOU'VE GOT BAND, THEATER, CHOIR, VISUAL ARTS.

THE TOTAL PRICE RANGES, DEPENDING UPON WHETHER WE BUY AN OLDER ONE OR A BRAND NEW ONE.
SO IT'S HARD TO SAY EXACTLY HOW MUCH IT WOULD BE.

AND AS A BOARD, WE CONTINUE TO TRACK THE BILLS VERY CLOSELY AND MEET WITH OUR STATE LEGISLATOR. THERE'S FOUR KEY BILLS THAT HAVE BEEN FILED THAT WE DEFINITELY HAVE OUR EYE ON. THE FIRST TWO, HB ONE AND SB ONE, ARE THE BUDGET BILLS FOR THE STATE, AND VERY CLEARLY LAY OUT THE PRIORITIES FOR THE SESSION.
I THINK IT'S REALLY IMPORTANT THAT EVERYONE UNDERSTANDS THAT BOTH CHAMBERS, BOTH THE SENATE AND THE HOUSE, ARE VERY MUCH ALIGNED AND HOW MUCH THEY SET ASIDE FOR FUNDING IN EACH CATEGORY, WHICH MEANS THAT THE ODDS OF A BILL GOING THROUGH IN THOSE AREAS ARE VERY LIKELY.
SO FIRST AND FOREMOST, LET'S TALK ABOUT PUBLIC SCHOOL FUNDING.
TEACHER PAY RAISES $4,000 HAS BEEN CARVED OUT FOR TEACHERS IN A DISTRICT THE SIZE OF CISD.
EDUCATION SAVINGS ACCOUNTS. THAT'S KIND OF THE ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM HERE.
BOTH CHAMBERS SET ASIDE $1 BILLION FOR SCHOOL CHOICE, AGAIN INDICATING THAT THERE IS ALIGNMENT BETWEEN THE TWO CHAMBERS AND THE ODDS OF AN EDUCATION SAVINGS ACCOUNT BILL GETTING PASSED IS VERY HIGH.
NOW, WHILE WE AS A DISTRICT DO NOT SUPPORT THIS, WHAT WE ARE GRATEFUL FOR IS THAT OUR STATE LEGISLATORS DID NOT PULL MONEY AWAY FROM PUBLIC EDUCATION TO ACHIEVE THIS. THEY LISTENED TO OUR REQUEST AND AS MENTIONED ABOVE, THEY ALSO THEY INCREASED PUBLIC AID.
AS WE MENTIONED IN OUR TOWN HALLS, ONE OF OUR KEY LEGISLATIVE PRIORITIES IS FUNDING UNDERFUNDED MANDATES, MOST SPECIFICALLY SPECIAL EDUCATION. SENATOR BETTENCOURT HAS OFFICIALLY FILED SB568, WHICH INTRODUCES CHANGES TO THE FUNDING FORMULA BY SHIFTING THE FOCUS FROM WHERE SERVICES ARE PROVIDED TO THE INTENSITY OF CARE NEEDED FOR STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES.
CISD PARTICIPATED IN THAT PILOT PROGRAM WITH TEA TO HELP SHAPE THAT BILL.

THAT'S A RISK TO OUR DISTRICT. THERE WAS A BILL INTRODUCED, AND BY THE WAY, I HAD A LOT OF SUPPORT THAT ESSENTIALLY MANDATED OPEN ENROLLMENT FOR EVERY SCHOOL DISTRICT ACROSS THE STATE OF TEXAS IF THAT SCHOOL WAS NOT AT FULL CAPACITY.SO WE HAVE SUBMITTED OPPOSITION TO THAT BILL AND SPOKEN TO OUR LAWMAKERS, EXPLAINING THE IMPACT THAT MANDATORY OPEN ENROLLMENT WOULD HAVE IN OUR COMMUNITY, AS WELL AS HOME VALUES FOR DISTRICTS LIKE CISD.
THE HOUSE HAS NOT YET SELECTED ITS COMMITTEE MEMBERS, SO WE'RE NOT RALLYING THE TROOPS JUST YET, EVEN THOUGH WE AS A BOARD ARE ABSOLUTELY HAVING THOSE STRATEGIC CONVERSATIONS, ONCE THOSE COMMITTEE MEMBERS ARE IN PLACE, WHICH SHOULD BE BY THE END OF THE WEEK, COMMUNICATIONS WILL BEGIN BEING RELEASED FROM THE DISTRICT.

FORMER SUPERINTENDENT OF CARROLL ISD DAVID FALTYS SUED THE DISTRICT ON DECEMBER 9TH, 2024, ALLEGING PROBLEMS WITH HIS RETIREMENT COMPENSATION.
THE DISTRICT FILED A PLEA TO THE JURISDICTION ON JANUARY 10TH, WHICH WILL BE SET FOR A HEARING SOON.
IF THE COURT GRANTS OUR PLEA, THE RESULT WOULD BE A DISMISSAL OF THE SUIT.
THIS CASE IS IN THE 17TH DISTRICT COURT IN TARRANT COUNTY.

OUR DRAGON CHEERLEADERS WERE ALSO AWARDED THE VOCAL EXCELLENCE AWARD AND FINISHED IN THE FINALS AT UIL CHEER COMPETITION. THE SPECIAL OLYMPICS UNIFIED CHEER TEAM SHOWCASED THEIR SKILLS AND DRAGON PRIDE DURING THE NCA CHEER COMPETITION THIS PAST FRIDAY. THIS YEAR MARKED A BIG STEP AS THIS TEAM TRANSITIONED FROM A SPECIAL OLYMPICS TEAM TO A UNIFIED CHEER TEAM, AND NOW THAT THEY'RE A UNIFIED CHEER TEAM, THEY COMPETED AND WERE CROWNED STATE CHAMPIONS.
SO ANOTHER STATE CHAMPION FOR CARROLL ISD. DRAGON SWIM AND DIVE.
ALSO, CARROLL ROBOTICS RECENTLY COMPETED AT CARROLL HIGH SCHOOL.
THEY WILL ALSO BE COMPETING TO DEFEND THEIR SIX A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP ON FRIDAY, JANUARY 31ST.
AND IF YOU DON'T KNOW THIS, WE ACTUALLY ARE THE THREE TIME STATE CHAMPION IN IN ROBOTICS.
THE LAST TWO YEARS IT'S BEEN A PILOT PROGRAM.

WE HAD A LARGER THAN ANTICIPATED DECREASE IN ENROLLMENT, AND THE TAXABLE VALUES CAME DOWN A LITTLE LOWER THAN WE ANTICIPATED WHEN WE ADOPTED THE BUDGET IN MAY. SO AS YOU CAN SEE, OUR PROJECTED VARIANCE IN NET OPERATING REVENUES ARE JUST DOWN A LITTLE BIT.
IT'S ABOUT A HALF A PERCENT. AND THE EXPENDITURES WE ALSO ANTICIPATE WILL COME IN UNDER BUDGET BY ABOUT 2 TO 3%, WHICH IS BASED ON OUR ANNUAL TRENDS THAT WE USUALLY WORK OFF OF.
AND THIS PROJECTION ALSO INCLUDES THE REALIZATION OF ABOUT 8.5 MILLION IN PROPERTY SALES.
