COACH RILEY DODGE EARNED HIS 100TH WIN, AND OUR FOOTBALL TEAM STANDS PROUD AS DISTRICT 4 6A CHAMPIONS PREPARING FOR THEIR FIRST PLAYOFF GAME NEXT WEEK.

UNDER THE DIRECTION OF KEN JOHNSON, OUR AWARD WINNING BAND CONTINUES TO SET THE STANDARD OF EXCELLENCE ON AND OFF THE FIELD.

OUR THEATER DEPARTMENT, UNDER THE LEADERSHIP OF RYAN BARBE, WRAPPED UP A SUCCESSFUL FIRST SHOW OF THREE CONSECUTIVE NIGHTS OF A SOLD-OUT CROWD AND IS ALREADY PREPARING THEIR NEXT PRODUCTION, A CHRISTMAS CAROL.

DIRECTOR CAISSIE LEVY CONTINUES TO LEAD OUR CHOIR AS THEY PREPARE FOR THEIR WINTER CONCERT, AND OUR DEBATE TEAM, LED BY OUR RENOWNED COACH ANTHONY BROWN, HAS COMPETED IN FIVE TOURNAMENTS THIS SEMESTER, WINNING FOUR OF THE FIVE. THESE ACHIEVEMENTS ARE MORE THAN TROPHIES OR TITLES.

THE PAST WEEK, I GOT TO SHADOW A HEALTH CARE WORKER IN THE CATH LAB.

IT WAS EXCITING TO SEE THE INFORMATION WE HAVE BEEN LEARNING IN CLASS ABOUT CARDIAC MEDICATIONS, PROCEDURES, AND THE FUNDAMENTALS OF PATIENT CARE BEING PRACTICED IN REAL TIME.

ALTHOUGH MANY CMA SENIORS HAVE INTERNSHIPS AND RESEARCH EXPERIENCE, THIS INTERNSHIP STANDS OUT AS THE HOSPITAL PROVIDERS ARE FAMILIAR WITH US AND OUR PROGRAM.

THE PROVIDERS OFTEN ASK US QUESTIONS ABOUT WHAT WE'RE LEARNING IN BIOTECH, AND TAKE THE TIME TO TEACH US AND OFFER VISUAL AIDS FOR OUR CLASS.

TOPICS IN A HOSPITAL SETTING THAT CAN'T BE OFFERED IN CLASS WITH TEXTBOOKS AND NOTES.

I ALWAYS LOOK FORWARD TO HEARING THE STORIES FROM MY CLASSMATES, WHO SHADOWED IN DIFFERENT AREAS OF THE HOSPITAL AND ASKING MISS METCALF ANY QUESTIONS I HAD FROM MY HOSPITAL LEARNING TO CLARIFY ANY DOUBTS I MAY HAVE FOR THE FUTURE.

AS PER THE COLLEGE BOARD WEBSITE, AP CAPSTONE IS A DIPLOMA PROGRAM FROM COLLEGE BOARD BASED UPON TWO-YEAR LONG AP COURSES. AP SEMINAR AND AP RESEARCH. RATHER THAN TEACH SUBJECT SPECIFIC CONTENT, THESE COURSES DEVELOP STUDENTS SKILLS IN RESEARCH,

STUDENTS WHO COMPLETE THE TWO YEAR PROGRAM CAN EARN ONE OF TWO DIFFERENT AP CAPSTONE AWARDS, WHICH ARE VALUED BY COLLEGES ACROSS THE UNITED STATES AND ACROSS THE WORLD.

NOT ONLY DID I GET THE AP CAPSTONE DIPLOMA, IT WAS BY FAR THE BEST CLASS I'VE TAKEN BECAUSE IT GAVE ME A REAL WORLD EXPERIENCE TO COMMUNICATE EFFECTIVELY AND ACTUALLY DO THINGS THAT MATTER OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOM, ESPECIALLY 40 PAGE RESEARCH PAPERS.

FOR MY AP RESEARCH PROJECT, CHOPIN YOUR STRESS AWAY.

I STUDIED HOW CHOPIN'S MUSIC AFFECTS STRESS LEVELS IN TEENS WITH SUBCLINICAL ANXIETY BY TRACKING HEART RATE CHANGES AND ANALYZING INTERVIEWS.

I'M ACTUALLY IN THE PROCESS OF GETTING THAT PROJECT PUBLISHED, WHICH IS REALLY EXCITING.

THIS PROGRAM HAS TRULY BEEN A BLESSING. IT'S BEEN A HUGE HIGHLIGHT IN MY COLLEGE APPLICATIONS, AND HAS SHOWN MY ABILITY TO TAKE INITIATIVE AND THINK INDEPENDENTLY, SOMETHING THAT'S ALREADY HELPING ME AS I APPLY TO RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES FOR COLLEGE.

AP CAPSTONE IS AN INCREDIBLE ASSET TO CARROLL SENIOR HIGH BECAUSE IT PUSHES STUDENTS TO GO BEYOND MEMORIZATION.

IT TEACHES US TO CREATE KNOWLEDGE. I CAN CONFIDENTLY SAY IT'S PREPARED ME NOT JUST FOR COLLEGE, BUT FOR LIFE. THANK YOU. THANK YOU.

ONE OF THE BIGGEST TAKEAWAYS I'VE GAINED FROM THE PROGRAM IS HOW INTERDISCIPLINARY IT IS.

THE WRITING, REASONING, AND RESEARCH SKILLS I DEVELOPED FROM CRAFTING LOGICAL ARGUMENTS AND EVALUATING SOURCES TO CONSIDERING MULTIPLE STAKEHOLDER PERSPECTIVES HAVE SHAPED HOW I APPROACH ALL MY OTHER CLASSES. THESE SKILLS HAVE TRANSLATED DIRECTLY INTO MY OTHER WRITING HEAVY CLASSES, SUCH AS AP LANGUAGE AND AP LANGUAGE AND COMPOSITION AND AP US HISTORY.

AS I'VE BEEN ABLE TO QUICKLY DEVELOP MY POSITION AND FORMULATE CLEAR THESIS STATEMENTS IN HISTORICAL, RHETORICAL, AND ARGUMENTATIVE ESSAYS ALL THANKS TO THE EXPERIENCE I'VE BUILT IN CAPSTONE.

FOR MY AP RESEARCH PROJECT, I EXPLORED STARBUCKS'S USE OF INTERIOR DESIGN TO SHAPE ITS BRAND IDENTITY AND CONCEPT OF THIRD PLACE THROUGH FIELD OBSERVATIONS ACROSS SEVERAL DFW LOCATIONS. I FOUND THAT DESIGN ELEMENTS SUCH AS LIGHTING AND SPATIAL DETAILS FOSTER COMMUNITY AND CONNECTION.

AFTER COMPLETING THE CAPSTONE CURRICULUM, I FEEL INCREDIBLY CONFIDENT STEPPING INTO COLLEGE LEVEL RESEARCH, AND I KNOW THESE SKILLS WILL PROVIDE A STRONG FOUNDATION AS I PURSUE PROFESSIONAL DEGREES.

AP CAPSTONE IS SUCH A VALUABLE PART OF CARROLL SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL BECAUSE IT TEACHES STUDENTS TO COMMUNICATE CLEARLY WHILE ENCOURAGING CRITICAL THINKING.

WHEN RECENTLY COMPLETING MY APPLICATIONS, I FOUND THAT THE SKILLS I DEVELOPED HELPED ME WRITE MY SUPPLEMENTALS RESEARCH COLLEGE COLLEGES AND DISCOVER HELPFUL APPLICATION TIPS.

IN A BROADER AN ASPECT AP CAPSTONE HELPED ME STOP SEEING IN BLACK AND WHITE AND MOST OF AP CURRICULUMS THAT I HAVE EXPERIENCED YOU CAN ONLY CHOOSE ONE RIGHT ANSWER. HOWEVER, IN THIS CLASS IT TAUGHT US TO DEVELOP OUR OWN VIEWPOINTS WITHOUT THERE BEING A RIGHT ANSWER.

COMMUNITY BASED INSTRUCTION, OR CBI, GIVES OUR STUDENTS HANDS ON, REAL WORLD LEARNING EXPERIENCES OUTSIDE OF THE CLASSROOM.

THE GOAL IS TO HELP THEM BUILD INDEPENDENCE AND PRACTICAL LIFE SKILLS THAT WILL SET THEM UP FOR SUCCESS IN ADULTHOOD.

WE VISITED ALL SORTS OF PLACES THE LIBRARY, GROCERY STORE, FIRE STATION, AND EVEN CHICK-FIL-A.

EACH TRIP IS PLANNED AROUND OUR STUDENTS INDIVIDUALIZED EDUCATION PROGRAM, OR IEP GOALS.

THAT COULD MEAN LEARNING TO MAKE A PURCHASE, PRACTICING SAFETY IN THE COMMUNITY, OR NAVIGATING SOCIAL INTERACTIONS.

FOR EXAMPLE, AT THE LIBRARY, STUDENTS WENT ON A SCAVENGER HUNT TO EXPLORE DIFFERENT SECTIONS AND PRACTICE ASKING STAFF FOR HELP.

AT THE GROCERY STORE. THEY USE SHOPPING LISTS AND EVEN CHECKED OUT AT SELF-CHECKOUT.

BACK AT SCHOOL, WE STARTED SELLING OR SELLING BUTTONS AND BRACELETS IN THE FRONT OFFICE.

STUDENTS HELP ASSEMBLE THESE ITEMS TO SUPPORT THE DRAGON EXCHANGE INITIATIVE, GIVING THEM THE HANDS ON EXPERIENCE FOR FOLLOWING MULTI-STEP INSTRUCTIONS.

OUR STUDENTS ALSO GOT TO VISIT THE FIRE STATION, WHICH WAS A REALLY BIG HIT, AND THEY'VE BEEN LEARNING COOKING SKILLS AS WELL, LIKE PLACING COOKIE DOUGH ON SHEETS AND MAKING DISHES SUCH AS POACHED EGGS, PIZZA, CREPES, TACOS AND PASTA. IT'S BEEN AMAZING TO SEE THEIR CONFIDENCE GROW AS THEY TRY NEW THINGS.

WE'RE SO PROUD OF ALL THE PROGRESS OUR STUDENTS HAVE MADE THIS YEAR THROUGH THESE EXPERIENCES.

THE SPORT OF RODEO WAS EVEN DESIGNATED THE OFFICIAL SPORT OF TEXAS IN 1997.

THE SOUTHLAKE CARROLL RODEO TEAM WAS CREATED TO ALLOW HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS TO PURSUE THEIR PASSION FOR RODEOS IN A COMPETITIVE, YET ENGAGING ENVIRONMENT. SO FAR SINCE I MADE OUR FIRST CHANGES TO ANY OF OUR SYSTEMS 17 MONTHS AGO, AND SO FAR, WE'VE SAVED ABOUT $715,000.

WE, WHEN I FIRST ARRIVED, I WOULD SAY HALF THE LIGHTING IN THE DISTRICT OUTSIDE DID NOT WORK.

AND THE LIGHTING THAT DID WORK STAYED ON 24 OVER SEVEN.

SO WE REPAIRED LIGHTING TO THE SENIOR HIGH FINE ARTS, THE PARKING LOT, WALNUT GROVE, CARROLL MIDDLE, JOHNSON ELEMENTARY, THE HIGH SCHOOL AND ROCKENBAUGH.

WE'VE DONE LIGHTING UPGRADES TO THE SENIOR HIGH COMPETITION GYM AND THE ADMIN GYM HERE.

WE FIXED MAJOR DOMESTIC WATER LEAKS AT 1101 NORTH CARROLL AND DAWSON MIDDLE SCHOOL, THAT HAD BEEN ONGOING FOR YEARS.

AND WE'RE CONTINUING TO TRACK COST AND USAGE DAILY AND MONITORING ALL HVAC ISSUES EVERY DAY.

THIS CHART RIGHT HERE, YOU SEE WE SAVED LAST SCHOOL YEAR $363,000.

IT'S 13% SAVINGS. YOU CAN SEE IN JANUARY AND FEBRUARY IT WAS COLDER AND WE SPENT MORE MONEY THAN WE DID THE YEAR BEFORE.

WE ALSO. SEE THE SAME TREND WITH NATURAL GAS.

WE LOST MONEY ON NATURAL GAS, BUT WE ACTUALLY USED 1% LESS.

IT WAS JUST A 99 PERCENT INCREASE IN TOTAL COST OF GAS.

AND ALSO IN JANUARY AND FEBRUARY IT WAS COLDER, BUT AND BUT WE PROTECTED OUR BUILDINGS BETTER, AND WE DIDN'T HAVE THE MAINTENANCE ISSUES THAT WE HAD PREVIOUSLY THE YEAR BEFORE. WATER.

SO, IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE CITY, WE HAVE ENSURED THAT OLD DRAGON STADIUM WILL INSTEAD BE TRANSFORMED INTO A COMMUNITY GREEN SPACE,

AND SO, SO WE WERE BRAINSTORMING KIND OF IDEAS AND, AND JUST HAPPENSTANCE THAT THAT MISS KEMP AND 1956 PIZZA APPROACHED US AS WELL, AND SO. WE DID SOME ANALYSIS AND, YOU KNOW, SPECIFICALLY LOOKING AT PIZZA,
