AND I WOULD ALSO LIKE TO GIVE A MESSAGE SPECIFICALLY STRAIGHT TO OUR CARROLL ISD TEACHERS.
THIS COMMITTEE WAS CREATED TO DEVELOP A COMPREHENSIVE, MULTIYEAR PLAN TO ENSURE THE LONG TERM FINANCIAL STABILITY OF OUR DISTRICT, PARTICULARLY IN LIGHT OF THE UNCERTAINTY AROUND PUBLIC EDUCATION FUNDING IN TEXAS.
SHOULD THE 89TH TEXAS LEGISLATURE NOT ADDRESS THE FUNDING NEEDS OF OUR SCHOOLS, IT IS CRUCIAL THAT WE TAKE PROACTIVE STEPS TO BALANCE OUR FUTURE BUDGETS WHILE PRIORITIZING THE NEEDS OF OUR STUDENTS AND STAFF.
AS A DISTRICT, WE VALUE TRANSPARENCY AND OPEN COMMUNICATION.
THAT IS WHY I'M ADDRESSING A RECENT SOCIAL MEDIA POST FROM ONE OF OUR BRAC COMMITTEE MEMBERS, WHO SHARED INFORMATION ABOUT THE IDEA OF CLOSING DURHAM INTERMEDIATE SCHOOL AS EARLY AS THE NEXT SCHOOL YEAR.
AT THIS POINT, NO DECISIONS HAVE BEEN MADE REGARDING ANY POTENTIAL CLOSURES OR CHANGES.
WHILE THE POST HAS UNDERSTANDABLY CAUSED CONCERN AND EVEN SOME PANIC, WE BELIEVE IT STEMS FROM A LACK OF TRUST BETWEEN THE COMMUNITY AND THE BOARD RATHER THAN ANY HARMFUL INTENT BY THE INDIVIDUAL WHO MADE THE POST.

AND I THINK ULTIMATELY OUR GOAL IS, YOU KNOW, WE WANT TO BE IN THE 90TH PERCENTILE.
SO I THINK THERE IS ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT THERE.
AND HOPEFULLY AS WE SEE MORE STABILITY, WE'LL GET THERE.

LAST YEAR, WE SPENT $1.4 MILLION ON CONTRACTORS ALONE, AND TEN IS JUST A FRACTION OF THAT COST.

AND THEN AS FAR AS SUBSTITUTES FROM LAST YEAR, OUR NUMBERS WE USED WE HAD 288 SUBSTITUTES THAT WE USED. I DO KNOW THAT WE HAD AN INCREASE IN THE NUMBER OF SUBSTITUTES LAST YEAR FROM THE GENEROSITY OF Y'ALL APPROVING A INCREASE IN THAT IN THE SUBSTITUTE RATE WE HAD OF THOSE 8347 JOBS THAT WERE FILLED, 6766 WERE FILLED WITH SUBSTITUTES. THE COST OF SUBSTITUTES TO THE DISTRICT LAST YEAR WAS $690,000, WHICH I MEAN, TO ME, $700,000 SEEMS LIKE A REALLY, REALLY LARGE NUMBER.
IS THERE ANYTHING THAT EQUATES TO THAT REASON, OR IS IT JUST TEACHERS CALLING IN SICK OR ON VACATION? IT'S A COMBINATION. TEACHERS CALLING IN SICK TAKING EITHER SICK DAYS, PERSONAL DAYS.
COMPETITIONS. SO DOES THAT AMOUNT COME OUT OF A CAMPUS BUDGET? THE SUBSTITUTES OR DOES IT COME OUT OF THE DISTRICT? IT DEPENDS ON THE TOP OF ABSENCE.
MR. JOHNSON, OF THE CAMPUS BUDGETS THAT THEY HAD TO PAY FOR THEIR OWN SUBSTITUTES.
IT WOULD BE IF IT WAS A DISCRETIONARY SUBSTITUTE, IF IT'S SOMEBODY THAT'S SICK OR ON LEAVE.
WHAT'S THE DISCRETIONARY WOULD GO TO PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT.

SO WHEN WE'RE TALKING ABOUT HAVING A BIG IMPACT ON SUBS, AND IF YOU LOOK AT THAT, YEAH, I MEAN YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT OVER A THOUSAND SUBSTITUTE JOBS THAT WENT UNFILLED, WHICH I GUESS THAT JUST MEANS TEACHERS ARE COVERING CLASSES WHEN THAT HAPPENS OR PRINCIPALS.
OKAY. AND SO LOOKING AT OUR INITIATIVES FOR THIS YEAR, WE WOULD LIKE TO IMPROVE THE PROCESS FOR THE EXIT INTERVIEWS SO THAT WE CAN GET A BETTER IDEA OF ACTUALLY WHY STAFF ARE LEAVING THE DISTRICT.
AND WE WANT TO CONDUCT A CLIMATE SURVEY TO GET SOME GOOD DATA THERE SO WE CAN MAKE SOME DECISIONS BASED ON THE FINDINGS OF THAT.
SO I MEAN, WHAT WOULD THAT LOOK LIKE? WHAT IS WHAT IS A CLIMATE SURVEY LOOK LIKE.

IF YOU WILL RECALL, LAST MONTH I DID BRING THE DISTRICT AND CAMPUS IMPROVEMENT PLANS FOR APPROVAL.
I AM VERY PROUD OF OUR CAMPUS IMPROVEMENT PLANS.
WE'VE REALLY DONE A GOOD JOB OF THAT OVER THE LAST COUPLE OF YEARS, OF MAKING SURE THAT WE'VE BEEN A LITTLE BIT MORE INTENTIONAL IN WHAT WE WRITE IN OUR IMPROVEMENT PLANS, IF YOU WILL. LOOK, WE'VE GOT MORE DATA IN OUR IMPROVEMENT PLANS THIS YEAR THAN WE HAVE EVER HAD BEFORE.
I MEAN, SO IT LOOKS OUR PRINCIPALS ARE REALLY DIGGING INTO THEIR DATA.
THEY'RE REALLY PUTTING THE DATA OUT THERE.

SO EVERY SINGLE SCHOOL KIND OF DID WHATEVER THAT THEY WANTED TO DO.
WE'RE NOT PERFECT YET, BUT WE'RE GETTING A LOT BETTER IN OUR ALIGNMENT.
I APPLAUD OUR STAFF FOR REALLY WORKING HARD TO MAKE SURE THAT WE ARE DOING THAT, BECAUSE WHAT WE'RE DOING ON ONE CAMPUS, WE SHOULD BE DOING ON THE OTHER FOUR ELEMENTARY CAMPUSES.
THE HIGH SCHOOL HAS DONE A GOOD JOB.
BUT THEY'VE REALLY UNDER MR. INHOFE AND MR. WILSON'S LEADERSHIP, THEY'VE REALLY YOU KNOW, THEIR THEME WAS, YOU KNOW, WE'RE THE ONE OR WHATEVER IT IS THAT THEY'RE I CAN'T ALL OF A SUDDEN NOW I'VE GONE BLANK.
BUT ANYWAY, BASICALLY THEIR THEME IS WE'RE ONE SCHOOL.
AND SO AND I REALLY THINK THAT THEY'VE REALLY TRIED TO DO THAT.
I MEAN, THEY'VE REALLY WORKED TOGETHER.
THESE TWO THESE TWO CLASSES SHOULD NOT LOOK DIFFERENT.
THEY'RE BOTH GETTING HIGH SCHOOL CREDIT.

ONCE THESE GET APPROVED, WHAT IS THE PROCESS? WHAT IS THE DISTRICT ADVISORY COMMITTEE DO WITH THESE? WHEN THEY DO, THEY JUST LOOK THEM OVER DURING ONE OF THEIR MEETINGS.
WHAT'S THE PROCESS FOR THAT? OKAY. SO WHAT WE WILL DO IS WE WILL TAKE OUR DISTRICT IMPROVEMENT PLAN TO DAC OUR DISTRICT ADVISORY COMMITTEE.
AND WHAT THEY WILL DO IS DAC WILL TAKE A LOOK AT IT.
NOW, THE GREAT THING ABOUT TAKING IT TO DAC IS WE'VE GOT COMMUNITY MEMBERS WHO ARE LOOKING AT IT.
